my therapist told me to write this

1 min

my therapist told me to write this

i told her i hate this prompt

that i’ve done this over and over and over again

so she told me so write it about change

.

the season’s turning my dear

and so will you

your thoughts still come at breakneck speed

but the rhythm of your walks in the mornings

sets a beat for your day

the chill keeps you grounded

you still love the cold

you hope it snows this year

you want to know who you are?

how you make art

and write poems so close to your heart

your pen shakes when you sign your name

but you still do it

you’ve eaten a balanced breakfast

like three days in a row this week

you renewed your car registration on time

your inspection is still overdue

we are taking both strides and baby steps

you are a beautiful mess

in love and learning to love all of yourself

that knot in your stomach is starting to come undone

your body is no longer

the battlefield of your mind

though the extremes are still there

they are far away, like memories

now that the leaves are turning

and the sweet smell of autumn decay

sits heavy in the morning air

you breathe easier

the world might not look at you and think

you’ve changed me

but you have

maybe all these words you write

these pieces when you pull your heart out

and let the world see it

will be something to remember you by

but you are okay if they don’t

because you create for you

judgement is unimportant

when existence has been pain in the past

you are starting to heal in

ways you didn’t know existed

you were too young

you are still too young

to understand where your life will go

for your thoughts probably won’t slow

they do, and have, become more kind
