For Ruth

Sing-sing me a melody

in your bad Scottish-Essex accent

lift my spirits

from the gutter to the sky’s grand entrance

Tell me you love me

even if you don’t yet trust me

Tell me

I’m special and needed

even if you don’t yet trust me

Recount a silly joke or pun you can’t fully recount

without erupting in glorious infectious belly laughs

Just say anything… anything positive

to lift my spirits higher than the Shard

with more intent than a yes from a Dragon

Bring me to life with your wide-mouthed smile

when you see a dog, cat

or horse, yes horse, a horse happy and hopeful

Just do anything… anything positive

to give me that natural

dopamine, serotonin,

oxytocin, and endorphin rush

Butter me scones or fruity teacakes,

bake me a cake or just give me marshmallows

just do anything… say anything

Though my world

won’t fully stop aching

Though my mind

won’t stop dragging me down

your words and actions, meaningful interactions

will carry me, lift me up

Break the cycle

of madness and sadness

of lovelessness and hopelessness

Replace it with

one of cyclical joy and untempered hope

Resilience

in the face of everything… anything

this world throws

at me, you,

us,

unit of two

Thanks for reading!

Author’s Notes: So…this…just in case it needs to be explained is an ode to my ever-faithful through thick and thin, through good and bad…wife, Ruth. She read it before I published it and gave it the official seal of her approval. Also, not a massive fan of the title, but Ruth suggested it and I figure…what’s the point in trying to come up with a clever “POET” title for a pretty little, romantic ode to my wife?
