Ah felt this one. I often get annoyed at myself for not stopping enough and taking in the beauty around me. Well written and love that image!

Lol…hahahaha…yeah…who is cutting bread into circles? I wasn’t sure exxactly if it was a muffin or crumpet….i was edging towards crumpet…because…they are a different level of scrumptious! Glad I was clever enough to spot that haha! You’re welcome!

Oh my, Hayley. This is…raw and brutal in places to read. Proper bleeding out on the page/screen writing. My own experiences of addiction and it’s hold ring many truths…even if I’m coming from a different angle. Brave and courageous writing…Well done for writing, sharing and working through this all!

Crikey this was incredible. You packed a lot into so very little (haha, I hate always saying that about micros…but it’s true) I was left with more questions in the end but…i found it thoroughly disturbing…but written so expertly. I hope this places for you – I think it’s excellent!

Oh…love the description of the rain…as a big fan of rain as you know…but how much pure beauty and elegance you put into what I assume is like an English muffin or crumpet being toasted and buttered…such delicious writing…then that suckerpunch ending. Well bloody done!

Beautiful writing…and just saw your comment to Kenny! It does read like you like spring…but even if you don’t…it’s beautifully evocative of what spring is for a lot of people. I love how you ended it because I think for many spring is that welcome gateway after the harshness of winter that means Summer is coming.

I…yes…this one made me really kinda teary eyed. Such elegance though…such deftness in how you, in not even that many words, brought their age-old friendship to life. So much sadness and beauty in one story. Wanna know something weird. One of my first drafts/ideas for that particular challenge, was for two friends, an ancient eagle and an…[Read more]

Stunning. Sexy but not disgusting. Beautiful in its way and just brilliant use of an acrostic. This was one of my favourites…though that’s always going to be hard to decide from your mammoth collection of eclipse-inspired ones! Also…that guy has an inspired level of upper body strength and a killer core lol. Tal, fin.

This is all kinds of beautiful sadness. I love how much you get from what many would see as a simple pen. For any artist, a pen or paintbrush or whatever, is not really that simple…and if you have a favourite one…one that feels “right” in your hand and is with you when you write stuff you are proud of or that’s important…it is so much more…[Read more]

I’m glad you enjoyed it…less glad you relate to it…at least it feels like we’re not alone eh? The snowballing thing was an afterthought. I had the original piece…then I did my “tweaks” but it felt so hurried in just one stanza…which is why I thought of it working like a cycle and then all these different extras coming through with each…[Read more]

Thanks, ROCK! Appreciate that. Totally agree. Sometimes people’s hate is born of something horrible and unpleasant…and can be understandable I guess to an extent…but it’s when you let it rot and fester, I think that’s a problem. Appreciate your comment!

Thank you, River! Appreciate that a lot! It was originally going to be a one stanza thing…but then I started adding lots of weird stuff to it…so felt it would work better as a cyclical sorta thing. Thanks and well done on this new place! Loving it already!

Great piece Paul, loved the repetition – enjambment, worked so well to emphasise the emotion alongside the asides= like the more you tell/will yourself to feel a certain way, you can’t escape it. Very clever, . I don’t think I’ve ever felt hate but I sure as hell have been angry – there’s a certain, weird satisfaction in it. Expecially when its self- righteous 🤣

Masterpiece, chef’s kiss with this poem, Paul. The urgency and escalation of the hate building, first sinking, then drowning is clever and apt. Melancholic and soothing rhythm, though, fighting the hate. Very relatable piece. Great work.

I love how this felt like it snowballed a bit as each line hit and then the repetition with the add-ins began, and it felt like a personal unraveling. Very effective and sadly a little too relatable. Wonderful work 🙂

I understand how hate is often hurt in disguise or the need to feel better about one’s self amongst the masses…but it destroys us like any disease process. Intense and thought provoking writing.

loved the repetition on this, especially how it expanded as the poem went on. It is passionate, beautifully written, and I feel the sense of urgency that Dana expressed. I really enjoyed this.

Really, thoroughly enjoyed this, Paul. Was it written to a tune? It feels like it could be a song. I’ve definitely thought I’ve felt hatred before but looking back I think it was more anger than hate. In my opinion you have to love something before you can truly hate it
-
Paul Stewart replied 2 years, 6 months ago
That’s the thing I believe a lot of people get wrong about anger…it gets wrongly described as a negative emotion…when all emotions are valid responses…in their place. But I think you are definitely right there…how can anyone have such a strong opinion about something without knowing them or it? That’s why I find racial hate so messed up and stupid…because it’s not based on real knowledge…people don’t hate black people, for instance, because they are bad people (they might believe lies, half-truths that lead to it) and sometimes there might be people who have had bad experiences…but ususally…that hatred is just a form of fear…and protection agiainst what people don’t like. Anger can be wonderful and helpful and righteous and justified. Anyway, no song in particular….but I do love music and sometimes when writing poetry, I do imagine it being sung, or spoke, or even rapped….so that maybe is why? Thank you anyway. And sorry for the massive reply lol!

I loved this Paul – I didn’t realised you studied film – that must have been so interesting! Your reasons (or not) Definitely resonate! And the ending made me chuckle – like such a Paul ending😁
Well…I love to leave people wondering…as you know…and I do struggle with whether it’s all a big con and really we just want people to say “you’re amazing” and all this bells and whistles about it being in our blood and very being and needing a release is bullcrap lol. I know it’s not, but love playing with that…and it is a very confusing thing. I think…for many writers…we start for some reason…then the reason changes…like life andd then you forget about why you started in the first place really. Like musicians…there are a lot of bands that just got together because getting girls/boys/whoever was easier being in a band…and then it became more. lol. Thank you though! Glad the ending made you laugh…that was my intention! 🙂
